Social Networking

Social networking is a great means of convenient communication that bridges people together from all over the world. Through social networking sites, people who share similar interests can form a group online and communicate with fellow users who share similar interests; it is a great way of networking and building friendship. Another benefit is that social media is a great place to seek help. It is so easy in today's society for someone to post a question to a public Facebook group and receive thousands of comments from experts, people who share the same interest, and some "trolls" (which is a downside). Another benefit is that social networking is a great way for job recruiters to hunt of job candidates. Facebook and especially LinkedIn are two social networking sites that help job seekers connect with recruiters, alumni, and experts in a specific job field. An example of this would be when you set an interest on LinkedIn and a couple of days later, a recruiter messages you regarding your interest and resume.
A dark side fo social networking would have to be the lack of privacy. People also have different definitions and boundaries to privacy which could cause further miscommunication and friction. For example, Randi Zuckerberg once posted a "private" family photo on her Facebook profile. It was private to her, but the Facebook algorithm connected some family members in the photo (because they were Facebook friends) to a complete stranger to Randi. Randi did not take into account that the Facebook algorithm connects people who are friends of friends (i.e. strangers). After a polite conversation on Twitter, the photo was taken down at Randi Zuckerberg's request.
I think social networking had the potential to evolve. I think it would be good to insert an age restriction so that children who are young in age avoid the accident of seeing something that children should not be seeing. Social networking sites do filter some sensitive/inappropriate content, but having an age restriction would eliminate such risks altogether.
